” VAWA ” The need to know.
The Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) is a federal law that was passed in 1994 and reauthorized in 2022. It aims to protect survivors of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and stalking from their abusive partners or family members.
VAWA also provides funding for various programs and services that help survivors, such as shelters, hotlines, legal assistance, and prevention education. VAWA also allows some survivors who are not U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents to apply for a green card by self-petition, without the need of their abuser’s cooperation or consent. VAWA is a necessity because it recognizes the seriousness and prevalence of violence against women and provides them with essential support and resources to escape abuse and rebuild their lives.
